This Maple Ricotta and Avocado Toast ticks all the boxes when it comes to a speedy breakfast, lunch or dinner without compromising on flavour. The ricotta’s mild and slightly nutty flavour means it works well in both sweet and savoury dishes, while adding a gorgeous texture to this dish. Adding a dash of 100% pure Canadian maple syrup to the cheese gives it a gorgeous sweetness that pairs perfectly with ripe avocados. Simply add sweet or savoury toppings depending on your mood. The finishing touch? An additional glug of 100% pure Canadian maple syrup – which brings everything together perfectly.

What ingredients do I need to make this Maple Ricotta and Avocado Toast?

Here’s what you need for the very best Maple Ricotta and Avocado Toast:

  1. Bread. Which bread you choose is super important. A good, rustic sourdough works wonders and has a mild, tangy flavour that pairs beautifully with the toppings. However, most breads will work wonderfully depending on your preference.
  2. Avocados. I like to use organic Hass avocados. Check how ripe they are by giving them a gentle squeeze. You want some give in the fresh but not too much that you end up with mush.
  3. 100% Pure Canadian maple syrup. A great natural sweetener, I personally love using either the Dark or Very Dark grade in this particular recipe for their rich and robust flavours.
  4. Ricotta. Ricotta is an Italian cheese made from whey which is cooked again. It has a creamy, slightly grainy texture that spreads well but keeps its bite.
  5. Toppings. Choose whatever your heart desires. I’ve included some of my favourites below.

What toppings go well with this Maple Ricotta and Avocado Toast?

I can’t deny it. I’m a topping fiend. For the best avocado toast, it’s seriously all about the toppings! You can load up your toast or keep it really simple. Either way, it’ll be a quick fix for when the craving calls, and these are my favourite combos:

  • Coconut shavings, sunflower seeds, chia seeds and maple syrup
  • Everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds and maple syrup
  • Bacon, peanuts and maple syrup

Did you know?

Maple syrup is classed based on its colour and flavour profile. The colours and flavours will change throughout the spring harvest and range from a light, delicate taste through to a dark, strong taste. Using the correct maple syrup in recipes changes everything.

Golden. This syrup comes from maple sap harvested at the very beginning of the season and has a sweet, delicate flavour. Perfect for topping yoghurts and ice cream.
Amber. A pure, rich taste and a magnificent amber colouring, this is fantastic for vinaigrettes and desserts.
Dark. This syrup has a more pronounced caramel flavour – perfect for cooking, baking and sauces and especially good for fruity dishes.
Very dark. This syrup is harvested at the end of the season and has a rich and distinctive flavour. Beautiful for sauces and glazes.
